Small Group (pages 200-201)
Build Cube Stairs
Children, individually or with a partner, build up to at least 10 with connecting cubes. As they work, discuss the plus 1 pattern; that is, when we count, the next number is one more than the one before. In stairs, each step has one more cube than the one before. Review how counting the number of steps (horizontally) and the number of cubes in a step (vertically) equal the same number.
Like many of this weeks activities, Build Cube Stairs integrates many skills. Children put numbers in order, count from one number to the next, and recognize the step like visual patterns.
How Many Now? (Hidden version)
Give each participating child a copy of the Numeral Cards from the Teachers Resource Guide. Have children put their cards in order (you can limit the range of Number Cards the children have). Then set out two counters, and ask children to show the card that tells how many counters there are. Cover the counters with a dark cloth, and then add another counter. Have the children show the card that tells how many counters there are now.
One child lifts the cloth and the group counts the counters to check their answers. The cloth is then replaced. Add or subtract a counter and, again, ask all children to show the card that tells how many counters there are. Lift the cloth to count to check. Repeat as childrens interest and time allow.

Place Scenes
Children choose several Place Scenes, and put counters on each scene to match the number of the Numeral Card, which has been placed on the able. Children then tell stories about their scene.

Whole Group (page 216)
Feely Box Match
Secretly hide a trapezoid from a Shape Set in the Feely Box. Display five shapes from another shape set, including the one that exactly matches the one you hid.
Have a child put his or her hand in the box to feel the shape; that child should then point to the matching shape on display. Encourage the child to name the shape and explain how he or she figured it out. Discuss the shape, emphasizing straightness of the sides and the number of sides and angles.
Small Group (page 216)
Feely Box (Match and Name)
Start with the Match version of Feely Box, following the Whole Group directions. Be sure to repeat the activity with the trapezoid and rhombus. Children who do not get a chance today will get one during Thursdays small group.
As soon as children are ready, switch to Feely Box (Name). Have a pair of children demonstrate how to play it during Work Time: Child one hides a shapes set shape in the Feely Box, and Child two puts his hand in the box to feel shape and tell what it is. Encourage children to share how they figured out the shape, and discuss each shape, emphasizing its particular attribute.
